Do you or have you ever had someone in your life that was very smart? Someone that you respected so much because every thought or idea that they expressed was always thinking outside of the box? Have you ever had the amazing moment of sitting in a room or witnessing a speaker of someone so intelligent that you found yourself actually with your jaw dropped?
I have been fortunate enough to have a few of these type of people in my life. It seemed when they spoke that a light-bulb would actually turn on over my head. And always I would find myself thinking, why didn't I think of that? There have been four people in my life that I have admired for their quick creativity and humor, but mostly how very, very smart they were and are. Three were older and one is younger.
Often as I watch the daily commentary or the news I am stunned that no true intellect seems to represent us. There have been countless articles about the lack of intelligent thinking in the political arena, some even from me. I believe my first one was when they were showing weapons of mass destruction being moved in a tarp covered truck. My brother and I had lunch together right after that vision. We both were laughing at how they expected us to believe that there was a nuclear weapon being transported there and how certain we were that it was all about the oil really, from the "oil-well guys" in the White House at the time and that we were suppose to be suckered into believing this stuff. Well that didn't stay funny very long.
I know these people are educated. But it is a little like the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, who answers when Dorothy ask, "How can you talk if you don't have a brain?" And he responds, "I know an awful lot of people who talk and don't seem to have any brains."
Somewhere along the line it appears to me that the art of manipulation was replaced by needing and wanting to know facts. Our representatives, many of them, decided that in order to get reelected representing their constituents, for the better good of their elected territory, did not need to be a thinking matter. Instead they found it was easier to manipulate the press. It did not take long for them to realize that our news had turned into an entertainment format. Drama reigned and we are of course the guilty parties that made it lead to that......or are we?
Do you really know anyone who sat in front of the TV and stayed awake and interested in watching a car chase for four hours? Didn't most of your friends say, "oh my god, are we seriously going to see nothing else until this ends?" Didn't you really flip the channel only to discover every news outlet was following the car? Didn't you give up and watch a movie or turn the set off completely? But my bet is all those "go-getter" reporters took a long afternoon of coffee and giggling and basically blew off the day, just as all of us are capable of doing while on the job now and then. And little by little the discovery was made that their jobs could be easier if they went for dramatic reporting versus that "dull, present the facts to the public" work.
I believe I heard more about the "fears" of the other side of Obamacare then I ever, ever heard the facts of the program explained. They do nightly series on Past Presidents, on Veterans, on Health issues and human interest stories. Why couldn't they have researched the facts of the program and explained them over time? Because it took work and oh yes, the reporter would have to understand what he was talking about.
But the meat of it is: Was there anybody that could or would explain it to them anyway? There were and are so many loose ends no one wanted to be tripped up in all that loose rope. Obama had to "move" and get it passed while he (and us) still had a chance, even though ironing out wrinkles would have been the best way to begin. Who had time? Nobody. Because smart people weren't to be found that could gracefully explain it was Medicare for the entire country.
Ah gee, I didn't really want to use examples because that isn't what was on my mind. I want to put a call out for really smart people, common-sense people, low-key big brain people to run for office! And none of them want to!! And the media is the reason....and the media watches us......and the circle just continues till the whole country spins into a bunch of looney-tunes!!
We have to "allow" for thoughtful persons to represent us. We have to"allow" them to change their minds after facts have been deciphered. We have to quit showing up at rallies dressed like monsters, holding vicious signs. I mean seriously people, how would you like to be the speaker at an event with a skeleton or a Cookie Monster in the crowd? Is your IQ going to say, "sure, these folks will understand me?" And do we really need to interview the blood splattered zombie on his opinion?! Is he going to change your mind? Is he the thoughtful insight you were hoping to find?
Please allow thoughtful, smart people back in office. The current crew is just too dang lazy to read!
