stepping out my back door on the way to work, a fog filled pasture in the valley and my pretty maple tree aglow

her trunk has seen better days, but she is still a beauty, I think

of course when I arrive home the fog is gone and the golden rod is visible across the road; the "sister" tree hasn't begun to change yet

This tree and I have developed quite a relationship through my 36 years on the farm. We go back to my son's birth in 1979 when on a February day I checked for three strong leaves that had hung tight on her all winter. I had watched them faithfully and determined that the baby would be born when those leaves finally let go. They were as stubborn as he was...but the morning of his birth (after laboring 8 hours at home) my husband went to pull the car closer to the house and I remembered!!
I remembered to look for the three leaves. They were gone!! And I knew that finally our baby was going to arrive♥
This tree has always been the first to change and we always thought she was the prettiest tree we'd ever meet. Her trunk has had me worried for several years now and she is scheduled to be removed...but again I find myself reconsidering when I witness the treasure that she bears.
Enjoy your Autumn. The little flashes of color are the very best some trees have to offer before their leaves tumble and there is a new birth♥
