This species, once thought to be headed for extinction due to the caged bird trade in the 1700's and 1800's has largely recovered since then.
The ability of the Northen Mockingbird to imitate sounds is truly impressive: some can incorporate over 100 different phrases of as many different birds in their songs
Phrases are usually repeated, often quite a few times and somewhat modified at each repetition.
They also can imitate non bird noises and the sounds of mechainical devices.
They are widespread across the United States in suburban and urban areas with shrubs or hedges. They are Berry Pickers. (and when they're tired of having their picture taken they give you this look)
They do pair off and nest in a bulky cup of twigs. Their lifespan is 20 years.
